A Guide To The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The UK Government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant is an initiative aimed at encouraging homeowners to transition to more sustainable heating systems. With the country’s net-zero goals in mind, the scheme provides financial support to replace traditional fossil fuel heating systems with low-carbon alternatives, such as air source heat pumps. Here’s what you need to know about the scheme and how to apply.

What Is The Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

Launched in May 2022, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides grants to homeowners, self-builders & landlords (including smaller organisations) in England and Wales. The scheme is designed to make the upfront cost of installing a low-carbon heating system more affordable, thereby promoting widespread adoption of renewable energy solutions.

The grants available under the scheme include:

  • £7,500 for the installation of an air or ground source heat pump.
  • £5,000 for the installation of a biomass boiler (in rural areas not connected to the gas grid).

The scheme is part of the government’s broader effort to decarbonise homes and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, helping the UK meet its climate targets.

Who Is Eligible?

To qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme:

  1. Property Ownership: The property must be owned by the applicant (including if its a business, a second home or rented out to tenants).
  2. Existing Heating System: The property must currently be using oil, gas, lpg, or direct electric heating systems.
  3. Energy Performance Certificate: A valid EPC is required (they are valid for 10 years).
  4. Installers: Only installations carried out by a Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS)-certified installer are eligible.

New builds which are still under construction are not eligible, however completed new builds with fossil fuel systems may be able to claim the grant.

How Does The Process Work?

Here is a step-by-step guide to applying for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme:

  1. Find a Certified Installer Start by finding an MCS-certified installer experienced in air source heat pump installations. They will assess your property’s suitability for an air source heat pump and confirm whether it qualifies for the grant.
  2. Get a Quote Once your property is assessed, the installer will provide you with a quotation for the heat pump installation. Ensure that the installer factors in the £7,500 grant when calculating your costs.
  3. Installer Applies for the Grant Your chosen installer will apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant on your behalf through the government’s portal. You don’t need to manage this part of the process, but the installer will require you to sign a consent form to proceed.
  4. Grant Approval Once the application is submitted, the government will review it and approve the grant if all criteria are met. The grant amount will then be deducted from your final installation bill.
  5. Installation With the grant secured, the installer will proceed with the installation of your air source heat pump. Depending on the complexity, the installation process typically takes between 3 – 5 days.
  6. Post-Installation Compliance After installation, the system will need to be commissioned and certified to ensure compliance with MCS standards. This has to be completed within 120 days of grant application, or the project will not longer be eligible.

Why Choose An Air Source Heat Pump?

Air source heat pumps are an excellent choice for reducing carbon emissions and increasing energy efficiency. These systems extract heat from the outside air and use it to provide hot water and heating for your home, even in colder temperatures. They’re particularly effective in well-insulated properties and can be combined with underfloor heating or solar panels for maximum efficiency.
